WordCamp Brisbane 2019!

It’s been just over 6 months since #WCBNE 2018, can you believe it? For some of us it feels like it was just yesterday… But we’re happy to let you know we’ve kept our promise to you, and we’ll be running another WordCamp Brisbane this year!

Many of us probably still haven’t caught up on watching those sessions we missed last year, but you’ll be happy to know the recordings of the sessions are still available! Try to watch them before coming along to #WCBNE 2019 yeah?

This is the last email notification you’ll be getting about posts on WordCamp Brisbane, unless you head on over to the 2019 WordCamp site and subscribe for email updates there. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter or get updates in the #wpbrisbane Slack Channel.

While you’re there, you should also go ahead and purchase yourself a ticket for this year! Ticket prices have been kept at $50 once again this year making it one of the cheapest two day conferences around!

The WordPress Meetups in Brisbane have also been growing this year! We’ve now got 4 meetups throughout the Greater Brisbane area including two day-time meetups in Chermside and Coorparoo in addition to the two evening meetups in Fortitude Valley and North Lakes. For further details about those, check out the WordPress Brisbane meetup group on Meetup.com, and for those of you outside of Brisbane, don’t forget the Ipswich and Gold Coast meetups too!

From all the organisers of past, present and future WordPress events in Brisbane, we hope to see you again soon!

PS. If you’re no longer in the Brisbane area, go check out your local WordPress meetup for further news, and keep an eye out for announcements for WordCamp Sydney and WordCamp Port Macquarie later this year too!

Coming soon, The presentations will also be available on WordPress.tv, you’ll find the event archive here (They’re currently in the moderation queue).
If you’ve never heard of WordPress.TV, it’s a great resource containing videos from all the WordCamps around the world which have been recorded for your viewing, See Matt Mullenweg’s Summertime Update at WordCamp Europe, or last years State of the Word at WordCamp US 2017 – or hold off a few weeks until the videos from WordCamp US 2018 are available.

Welcome To WordCamp Social Event

Hey Awesome WordCampers,

If you are in town Friday night before WordCamp, and looking for something to do, why not come on down to the Fox Hotel in South Brisbane and hang out with other WordCampers and get to know each other before the fun begins.

If you are new to WordCamp this is a good opportunity to meet other WordPress fanatics ahead of WordCamp Brisbane, maybe make a new friend or two, and get some tips to getting the most out of the weekend, or, if you’re a seasoned veteran, you can catch up with some old friends.

This is an unofficial social event with the sole purpose of just meeting and greeting other WordPress devotees and having a few social drinks, or a meal, there is no official start or end time, just turn up when you can and look for other WordPressers, some of us will be wearing obvious shirts 😉

So come along and mingle, make some new friends, maybe catch up with some old ones, and ease your way into what promises to be a fantastic weekend of WordPress goodness.

This event is open to all WordCamp Brisbane attendees, or really anyone who wants to hang out with some WordPress nerds.

Hope to see you there!

#WCBNE After Party

There ain’t no party like a WordCamp Brisbane After Party party, and this year will be no different.

We will be gathering at the Botanic Bar (same place as last year for returning WordCampers) which is a short stroll from the conference rooms in QUT.

Proceedings will kick off at 6pm on Saturday night, so you will have time to wander off and freshen up, or have a meal in one of the many restaurants near the venue before joining up with all the other awesome peeps, or even feel free to hang around with us and help pack up, we will be heading there as soon as everything is ship shape.

Festivities will conclude at 10pm, but feel free to kick on afterwards in Bris Vegas, there are many pubs and clubs in the vicinity (but don’t party too hard, we want to see you back bright eyed and bushy tailed for day 2).

Some light snacks (probably pizza) and drinks will be provided, and you’ll need your WordCamp badge to get in the door, so please don’t forget it!

Under 18’s are allowed provided they are accompanied by an adult.

We hope to see you there!

Schedule! We have a Schedule!

If you’ve been holding off until the Schedule was released, then today is what you’ve been waiting for!
We’ve released the schedule for the weekend! WOOHOO! With close to 30 presentations, there’s bound to be something for everyone.

Check the Schedule Get your ticket now

With WordCamp Tickets only costing $50 we run on a very tight budget, and that brings with it certain challenges – such as booking..

  1. A venue big enough to hold anticipated numbers – 8 weeks ago
  2. Enough Swag for everyone – over a month ago
  3. The amount of Coffee to bring – We did that on Monday
  4. The really big one, How much food to order! – We need to get that in by Friday!

What all that means, is that if you’re wanting to come along, and don’t yet have a ticket now is the time to get one. Once we put our final food orders in, we’ll only be able to sell so many tickets afterwards and expect that we’ll have enough food to go around.

We’ll keep ticket sales open as long as possible, so let your friends know about WordCamp and the amazing talks that we’ll have on, we’d love to see everyone there!

Not sure if you’ve got a ticket? Not sure if you know anyone going? Some people have made their attendance public and you can view a list of them on our attendee page!

Speaker Announcements – Round 6

WordCamp Brisbane is in less than 2 weeks time, Where did the time go!

10 Mistakes beginners make when setting up their websites

Michael Viller

Michael, who until a few years ago was a decade-long Joomla user, is joining us to talk about the 10 things beginners forget when setting up their WordPress website. He’ll be covering common questions such as How do I speed up my website?, My images are slowing down my website, how do i fix that?, How do I SEO?, How do I get google to visit my website? and many many more.
But are these really questions that should be asked afterwards? Not having these things done at the time of creating your website can make it harder and more costly to do later on.
This talk will lightly cover the above topics, and focus on the questions that can be asked ahead of time to reduce the pain later on, such as how to choose quality hosting, themes and page builders, WordPress settings and image compression plugins, and implementing SEO the right way from the start.

Michael has been the “Mick” of many things over the past 36 years of his life however one thing that he’s always been passionate about is building websites, He started teaching himself to build websites back in ’99 with HTML, then moved to mambo, then was an avid Joomla user for over 10 years and a very anti-WordPress person up till a few years ago, but hasn’t touched Joomla since.

The Future of the Web

Brendan Woods & Luke Carbis

Brendan & Luke are joining us to remind us that we’re living at a time in history when technology is changing at a profound rate, creating deep challenges for companies all over the world. Those with the foresight to adapt will be greatly rewarded, while those who ignore changing technologies will fall behind (aka Blockbuster). Join them and learn about the 4 major areas of change that will fundamentally disrupt the future of the web.

Luke Carbis is a trained teacher who decided to trade moody teenagers for programming. Today, he works to foster diversity, community, and possibility at XWP.

Brendan Woods works as a Team Lead with XWP, managing large scale WordPress solutions. Currently completing a Masters of Data Analytics, Brendan has a deep interest in how technology continues to shape our lives.

How to make the most of your WordCamp experience

Sally Eberhardt

Sally, a published author from the Sunshine Coast is joining us to talk about how WordCamps are a great opportunity to learn, network, and strengthen the WordPress Community. While WordCamps can be a little daunting for first timers (and introverts!) she’ll touch on the power of networking, how networking is about giving, how supportive the WordPress community is, and some self-care tips for introverts to help them maximise their experience at WordCamp without getting social burnout.

Sally Eberhardt a proud and happy introvert (although you’re forgiven for not realising this upon meeting her), has recently published her first book entitled Pain-Free Networking for Introverts.
Her first networking experiences were nerve-racking to say the least, fearing about whether anyone would talk to her, whether she’d fit in, and general lack of confidence. Turning all that around she now shares her journey with others to remove pain and maximise the rewards of networking.
She’s a lover of wild places, animals, photography, family, street-art, traveling, dining out, reading, writing, and of course, the Communities she’s Networked with on her journey here.

WordPress as API Middleware: We’ve been doing things wrong. Lets fix it!

Rheinard Korf

Rheinard is joining us to talk API & WordPress. Having integrated several API integrations for large clients patterns have emerge. Yet each time an API project comes up he finds us reinvent the wheel – Why? Mostly because of changing team composition, but more prominently… as a WordPress community we have been doing it wrong. What if there was a better way? What if we could standardise our approach for how we integrate with third-party APIs? What if WordPress became API Middleware?

In this talk Rheinard will explore this idea. He’ll use a real case study of where they’ve started to implement this. Ultimately he’s seeking feedback from the developer community with the intent to push WordPress forward in an exciting and unknown direction.

At the age of twelve Rheinard discovered a love for programming languages and writing software for friends and family. Whilst studying Information Technology he also discovered a love for teaching programming and has done so for over a decade before turning to programming as a career.
Rheinard has a passion for frameworks, programming languages and APIs. His most ambitious project he has worked on recently is Tide – a WordPress code quality and review ecosystem written primarily in the Go programming language. Now he is at it again, dreaming big and exploring the future of WordPress in an API dominated world.

Do what you do best and outsource the rest

Gal Baras

Gal, an online marketing consultant for small businesses from Brisbane, will talk about how a lot of people think that WordPress is so easy to use that anyone can do it, and while true, only up to a point. Most people can get a site going, but it won’t be nearly as good as a site created professionally, with a solid technical foundation (caching, backups, etc), a smooth user experience, tight security, search engine optimisation and more.

Gal is a Brisbane-based online marketing consultant working with small/local businesses and several business websites. Every Website he builds are based on WordPress and he provides “the full suite” for them: domain, hosting, web development, SEO, conversion optimisation, moral support, maintenance, backups and more.

Before venturing into the world of WordPress & business, he was in corporate IT for years working on large systems for very large organisations, which has given him a large-scale methodical perspective on website setup and operations. Having been “just a number” all those years, he’s used his experience to provide smaller clients with the personal touch and care thats appreciated by all.

She’s worked with clients in all types of business; including online stores ranging from large fishing tackle sites that sell tens of thousands globally to small local businesses selling disposable nappies.
